Sustainable & Smart Travel: a week in Miami, how to survive?

Beaches and parties? Yes, of course. But Miami is also art, cultures, and food.

Here is a short guide on what to do/eat in Miami in 144 hours.

How to get there

If you didn’t, read the article Europe to Miami for 250 euro. Of course, these offers are rare, but in the future, there will be more and more. Anyway, the average price to get to Miami is around 400 euro both ways.

Miami has two main airports Miami International that is in the city center, Fort Lauderdale that is 33 km away. They both are well connected with the city by public transport. If you are willing to save time and not money my suggestion is to use either Lyft or Uber to reach the city.

Where to Sleep

Miami or Miami Beach? Well, this is a good point:

  • Miami Beach is for the people willing to enjoy beaches, sea, and bars. You will be in the center of the nightlife 24/24h. The negative aspects are that is crowded, noisy and full of tourists.
  • Miami is more “calm” at night. I mean, is still Miami, lots of bars and events. In the city, you’ll be able to stay closer to what is “local typical life”. Of course, prices are lower. That’s another good point.

I’ve been in a “hostel”, in Little Havana. I found it on Airbnb, it is a house that a guy transformed into 4 rooms full of beds. Not the best ever, at all. The average price for a bed in a hostel in Miami beach is 20$/night, here we paid less than 10$/night. It may be a good option if want to stay on budget. Here is the link, again beware, you get what you pay for. (Here is the link to join me on Airbnb and to get 30$ discount on your first stay.)

Money

Dollars, where to get them?

It’s not so easy if you want to find a good exchange. I’ve been getting along quite well using my N26 Black or the Revolut card. In the 75% of the shops, you can easily pay by card.

Be careful, ATMs in the streets charge you with strange commissions! Use only official one.

Public Transport

Trains: there are two train services in the city. Metrorail and Metromover, the first one is a high-speed train connecting Miami downtown and suburbs with a single fare cost of 2,25$. The Metromover is an elevated line that circumnavigates downtown and it is free of charge.

Bus: Metrobus is operating on more than 95 routes around the city and the region. The cost of a single fare ticket is 2,25$. Cash is accepted, but my suggestion is to use an Easy Card to take advantage of free bus to bus transfer.

Private ride service: If it’s your first time in the US or you never used apps like Uber or Lyft it could be the perfect occasion to use the multitude of coupon or free rides they are offering to promote the services. The prices are good and you’ll save a lot of time.

Usually, I suggest walking around the city to discover it all. This is not the case. I mean, you can do it, but Miami is huge and you’ll spend precious time walking along bridges or motorways. The suggestion this time is to rent a bike or a skateboard, it will be way better and funnier.

Food

Here we are, my favourite section. In Miami, you’ll have the opportunity to meet and taste different cultures. Here there is a selection of the best quality/price restaurant for the type of food:

  • American

My suggestion here is to try Five Guys, it’s global I know. But they have good quality standards so you won’t regret it.

  • Mexican

El Taquito is in the heart of Little Havana, here is where I tried one of the best guacamole with nachos I ever had. You’ll not regret. Prices are regular.

  • Cuban

El Rey De Las Fritas. It’s not the best looking or cleanest places, it’s good Cuban traditional food served in the American way.

  • Asian/Peruvian Fusion

GKBistronomie, in Wynwood, is a mix of very fresh service, excellent atmosphere, and good music. Prices during Happy Hours are affordable.

What to see/do

Well, there will be always something to do/see in Miami.

Miami Beach and Lincoln Road, Downtown, Wynwood, Little Havana and Little Haiti. These are the main areas of the city and they will take most of your time.

To admire the skyline of the city during the night or to party in one of the famous clubs is a must.

A personal reflection, it is not worth to run from attraction to attraction, you’ll not be able to enjoy them.

Ride a bike/skate around the city, enjoy the sun. You’ll like what Miami has to offer to you.

If you would like to visit something outside the city, Everglades National Park is really nice too.

Ready to live your next Florida Adventure?

Miami is a perfect city for sustainable & smart travellers, and it offers a great variety of opportunities that will allow you to approach the cultures of all the communities that contributed to making this city unique. A week in Miami could become not only a week in Florida or in the United States but an incredible journey in a variety of cultures.

Enjoy your week in Miami!
